Georgia launches special savings accounts for disaster recovery
1+ hour, 36+ min ago (300+ words) DOUGLAS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) " Georgia homeowners will soon be able to open catastrophe savings accounts to help cover disaster-related expenses as insurance deductibles keep rising. House Bill 511 creates accounts similar to health savings accounts but designed for business or home disaster expenses. Money deposited into the accounts is tax-deductible, grows tax-free at the state level, and can be used for deductibles or repairs after a governor-declared disaster. The program addresses growing costs from hurricanes, floods and tornadoes affecting Georgia homeowners. Some communities are still recovering from recent disasters. "Some of our homes that were not insured and we found out some of our homes were underinsured. We are continuing to recover at a snails pace," said Mayor Tony Paulk. A Savannah woman faces a long road to recovery after a stranger attacked her with acid that ate through her clothes…...

"You have had a pretty big year, haven't you?" I said to Yost as we got seated in his Rhodes Tower office right outside the Ohio Statehouse. "It has been a busy year," he responded. Yost had his future planned out " launch his bid for governor, finish his term as the top cop, and then run the state. "Did you ever think the race would look like how it does now?" I asked. "No," he said. "Life and the future are unpredictable." It was long expected that after Gov. Mike DeWine finished his term, Yost would run against former Lt. Gov. Jon Husted. "That didn't work out, did it?" Yost said....

8+ hour, 31+ min ago (257+ words) CINCINNATI " Ohio's only all-female American Legion post is searching for a permanent home as its commander works to increase membership and community visibility. I sat down with Commander Melanie Veal, the first Black leader of American Legion Post 644. "I guess one of the biggest challenges for us is that we don't have a permanent home," Veal said. The post currently meets on the third Saturday of every month. In January, they plan to start temporarily meeting at the Groesbeck Library. WATCH: Veal says she wants more female veterans to know about the post Veal said establishing a permanent location would help achieve a key goal " expanding their membership among female veterans. "We do want to increase our membership. And we want to reach more women veterans that do not know that we exist," Veal said. Earlier this year, the group…...
Frigid Monday in NE Ohio gives way to warmup, rain later this week
9+ hour, 40+ min ago (581+ words) CLEVELAND, Ohio " One more frigid day stands between Northeast Ohio and a brief warmup that will bring the region its first above-average temperatures since the day before Thanksgiving. Cold, gray weather will remain in control across the region on Monday, with lingering lake-effect snow bringing minor accumulations to parts of the snowbelt before conditions gradually quiet down after a snow-filled weekend. The periods of light snow continue early Monday in far northeastern Ohio, especially eastern Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties, where an additional inch or two of accumulation is possible through the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. While snowfall rates are expected to remain light, brief coatings of snow are possible on untreated roads, particularly in the snowbelt. Elsewhere across Northeast Ohio, conditions will stay mostly dry, though skies remain mostly cloudy and temperatures will…...

But as he runs for Georgia governor, the Democrat is presenting himself in a new light to voters. Ohio vineyard owner relied on toxic weed killer. Now facing Parkinson’s, he wants it banned
10+ hour, 4+ min ago (1192+ words) Dave Jilbert always wanted to be a farmer. He went to agricultural school, moved to a homestead, started a winery and eventually purchased 16 acres of farmland in the central Ohio valley. He grew grapes for about five years, until he felt himself slowing down. It wasn't long before the tremors started. Jilbert, at the age of 61, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021. "I'm not a doctor," he said, "but all I know is I used paraquat and I got Parkinson's." There's no definitive cause of Parkinson's, a brain disease with no cure that gets worse over time, but researchers have found a majority of cases are environmental. Now Jilbert is suing. He argues that spraying a toxic pesticide called paraquat is to blame. And now he's trying to get it banned. "I'm trying to keep people from doing what I…...
